3D printable Sodium alginate-Matrigel (SA-MA) hydrogel facilitated ectomesenchymal stem cells (EMSCs) neuron differentiation

Summary: This study investigated the use of a novel hybrid Sodium alginate-Matrigel (SA-MA) hydrogel in extruded 3D printing to promote the differentiation and growth of EMSCs. The physical properties of the hydrogel were characterized and it exhibited sustained release of growth factor BDNF. The 3D printed scaffold showed high cell survival rate and enhanced neuronal differentiation efficiency compared to 2D culture, presenting a potential new biomaterial for neuronal regeneration in spinal cord injury treatment.

This Primer aims to provide an overview of bioprinting for biologists, focusing on extrusion bioprinting as the most widely used technology, and discussing alternative bioprinting technologies and future opportunities in biology.

It represents a versatile strategy for precise engineering of the central nervous system and other neural tissues for regenerative medicine applications.
