The Impact of COVID-19 on Transit Workers: Perceptions of Employer Responses and Associations with Health Factors

Sean P. M. Rice et al.

Summary: The study examined how transit workers perceive their employer's safety responses during the COVID-19 pandemic, finding significant associations between workers' knowledge of safety responses and COVID-19 risk perceptions, job attitudes, and health. Public-facing workers had worse perceptions of employer responses, higher COVID-19 risk perceptions, and work stress compared to non-operators. COVID-19 risk perceptions significantly mediated the relationship between public-facing work status and follow-up mental health outcomes.

Transmission and control of SARS-CoV-2 on ground public transport: A rapid review of the literature up to May 2021

Nicola Gartland et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the literature on the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 on ground-based public transport and the effectiveness of control measures during the early part of the pandemic. The review finds that the literature is heterogeneous and measurement of transmission in this setting presents challenges. While there is evidence of transmission in certain cases and some evidence of risk reduction through mitigation, the routes of transmission and key factors contributing to transmission were not clear during the early stage of the pandemic.

Public perceptions of non-adherence to pandemic protection measures by self and others: A study of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom

Simon N. Williams et al.

Summary: The study explores participants' perceptions of non-adherence to COVID-19 policy measures in the UK, focusing on reasons for non-adherence. Findings show an increase in non-adherence in others during the pandemic, with reasons including alert fatigue, inconsistent rules, lack of trust in government, learned helplessness, resistance and rebelliousness, and the impact of vaccines on risk perception. Participants highlighted systemic failures such as unclear policies and untrustworthy policymakers contributing to non-adherence.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mobility in ten countries and associated perceived risk for all transport modes

Diego Maria Barbieri et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on individual mobility patterns across various countries and highlights substantial disruptions in commuting and non-commuting travels, with people reducing the frequency of trips and use of different transport modes. Airplanes and buses are perceived as the riskiest modes of transport, leading to avoidance of public transportation among respondents. Socio-economic inequality and morbidity worsen perceptions related to COVID-19, shedding light on the perceived risks beyond actual health risks. This research provides insights into the global impact of the COVID-19 crisis and offers guidance for transportation practitioners in developing future strategies.

A systematic approach to estimating the effectiveness of multi-scale IAQ strategies for reducing the risk of airborne infection of SARS-CoV-2

Jialei Shen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a systematic approach for evaluating the effectiveness of multi-scale IAQ control strategies in mitigating the infection risk of COVID-19. Various IAQ control strategies are introduced and evaluated for specific indoor spaces to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection. These strategies can be applied in different scenarios to better prepare for possible future pandemics.

Social influence matters: We follow pandemic guidelines most when our close circle does

Bahar Tuncgenc et al.

Summary: Research shows that people's adherence to social distancing rules during the pandemic is influenced by their perception of how much their close social circle is distancing, rather than just believing that social distancing is the right thing to do. Additionally, individuals who feel deeply bonded with their country tend to align their behavior with their fellow citizens. Policymakers should emphasize shared values and utilize the social influence of close friends and family to achieve behavioral change during crises.
