A critical analysis of research methods and experimental models to study the physical properties of NiTi instruments and their fracture characteristics

Edgar Schaefer et al.

Summary: This review critically examines the physical properties of NiTi instruments and evaluates experimental models to provide suggestions for future research. Few studies have focused on how specific physical properties of NiTi instruments affect the clinical outcome of root canal treatment. It is essential to shift focus from physical properties towards more biological aspects to improve treatment outcomes.

Metallurgical Tests in Endodontics: A Narrative Review

Alessio Zanza et al.

Summary: This article provides a comprehensive guide to the metallurgical tests used in endodontics, summarizing their functional use and pros and cons. The most popular test is DSC, followed by EDS, AFM, and XRD. Other tests such as FIB, micro-Raman spectroscopy, metallographic analysis, and Auger electron spectroscopy are less commonly used.

Effect of Flexural Stress on Torsional Resistance of NiTi Instruments

Marco Seracchiani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of flexural stresses on the torsional resistance of nickel-titanium rotary instruments. Results showed a significant increase in torque at fracture when the instruments were used in a 90 degrees or 60 degrees curvature.

Influence of shaft length on torsional behavior of endodontic nickel-titanium instruments

Gianluca Gambarini et al.

Summary: This study examined the influence of shaft length on the torsional resistance of nickel-titanium rotary instruments. The results showed that longer instruments had higher torsional resistance, indicating that shaft length is an important factor to consider in torsional resistance.

Role of the Crystallographic Phase of NiTi Rotary Instruments in Determining Their Torsional Resistance during Different Bending Conditions

Alessio Zanza et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the role of the crystallographic phase of Nickel-titanium rotary instruments in determining their torsional resistance under different bending conditions. The results show that the crystallographic phase influences the maximum torque at fracture when the instruments are subjected to severe bending, and the radius of curvature significantly influences their torsional resistance.

A Paradigm Shift for Torsional Stiffness of Nickel-Titanium Rotary Instruments: A Finite Element Analysis

Alessio Zanza et al.

Summary: The study found that the polar moment of inertia has a significant impact on the torsional behavior of nickel-titanium rotary instruments, with a positive correlation with the maximum torsional load. In addition, mass and cross-sectional area have a smaller influence on torsional resistance. Therefore, the polar moment of inertia is the key factor in determining the torsional resistance of rotary instruments.

Angle of Insertion and Torsional Resistance of Nickel-Titanium Rotary Instruments

Dario Di Nardo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of the angle of instrument access on the torsional resistance of endodontic instruments. Results showed that torsional resistance increases as the angle of instrument access increases, with varying intensity depending on the crystallographic phase of the instrument selected.

An Update on Nickel-Titanium Rotary Instruments in Endodontics: Mechanical Characteristics, Testing and Future Perspective-An Overview

Alessio Zanza et al.

Summary: The success of root canal therapies has been significantly increased since the introduction of Nickel-Titanium alloy as the material for endodontic rotary instruments. The properties of Nickel-Titanium alloy, including biocompatibility, superelasticity, and shape memory effect, have led to a reduction in treatment time and increased predictability and effectiveness of endodontic treatments. However, intracanal separation of Nickel-Titanium rotary instruments remains a major concern for endodontists, with cyclic fatigue and torsional loads being the main causes. Researchers and manufacturers are focusing on parameters that influence the mechanical properties of endodontic rotary instruments in order to reduce the occurrence of intracanal separation.
