Cumulative stressors impact macrofauna differentially according to sandy beach type: A meta-analysis

Leonardo Lopes Costa et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of human activities on sandy beach macroinvertebrates and their interactions with natural habitat conditions. The results show that supralittoral forms are more negatively affected by urbanization on dissipative beaches, while intertidal organisms are more negatively affected on non-dissipative beaches. The study also finds that the response of macroinvertebrates to urbanization varies at different scales. These findings have implications for beach monitoring and mitigating human impacts on threatened ecosystems.

Macroinvertebrates as umbrella species on sandy beaches

Leonardo Lopes Costa et al.

Summary: This study investigated macroinvertebrates from sandy beaches on a global scale through meta-analysis, revealing that species co-occurring in different types of beaches have higher umbrella potential. Most umbrella taxa respond negatively to human disturbances, and these taxa also exhibit higher percentages of co-occurring species compared to non-umbrella species.

Low Densities of the Ghost Crab Ocypode quadrata Related to Large Scale Human Modification of Sandy Shores

Summary: Sandy beaches are essential ecosystems providing services for millions of people, but are threatened by human disturbance and climate change. Research shows that burrow density on sandy beaches is closely related to human modification and environmental changes.
