Decadal variations in natural and anthropogenic aerosol optical depth over the Bay of Bengal: the influence of pollutants from Indo-GangeticPlain

K. Yadav et al.

Summary: The study found that the atmospheric pollution over the Bay of Bengal and South China Sea has been increasing due to the rise in human population and industrial activities in South and Southeast Asia, as well as anthropogenic emissions from the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Significant increases in total and anthropogenic aerosol optical depth were observed in certain regions, particularly in the northwest Bay of Bengal and the western coastal regions.

Summary: The study reveals that melting of the Himalayan ice cover and deposition of atmospheric pollutants are the main factors influencing surface ocean pH and pCO(2) in the Bay of Bengal, with the region showing a stronger capability in absorbing atmospheric CO2 compared to the past two decades.

Phosphate removal through adsorption on suspended matter in the Bay of Bengal: Possible implications to primary production

D. N. Rao et al.

Summary: Low primary production in the Bay of Bengal could be attributed to the removal of phosphorus in association with suspended particulate matter, brought by river discharge. The removal of phosphate is more significant in the coastal waters where it severely impacts primary production. The laboratory experiment confirmed the decrease in primary production due to the removal of phosphate by suspended particles in the Bay of Bengal.
