Microbial oil production by the oleaginous red yeast, Rhodotorula glutinis NCIM 3168, using corncob hydrolysate

Divyata Vilas Rane et al.

Summary: This study used dilute acid pre-treatment and enzymatic hydrolysis to recover 80% of fermentable sugars from corncobs. The enzymatic hydrolysate was then used for microbial oil production, resulting in high lipid production with excellent biofuel properties. The energy content of the microbial oil was found to be significantly higher than that of corncobs, suggesting the potential application of this method in corncob waste management.

Characterization of biomass produced by Candida tropicalis ASY2 grown using sago processing wastewater for bioenergy applications and its fuel properties

Kiruthika Thangavelu et al.

Summary: The cost and raw material requirements for biodiesel production are key constraints to finding viable alternative fuels to petrol and diesel. Oleaginous yeasts, grown in agro-industrial wastewater, show potential as sustainable feedstock for biofuel production. Yeast biomass contains high lipid content and meets ASTM standards for biodiesel fuel characteristics.

Biodiesel production by oleaginous bacteria Rhodococcus opacus PD630 using waste paper hydrolysate

Anu Sadasivan Nair et al.

Summary: The utilization of waste paper for biodiesel production has environmental and economic advantages. In this study, waste paper hydrolysate (WPH) was used as a substrate for microbial lipid production. The medium with NH(4)C1 as nitrogen source yielded high biomass and lipid content. Under optimized conditions, the maximum biomass, lipid yield, and lipid content obtained were 6.51 g/L, 2.8 g/L, and 43% respectively. Extracted lipids showed similarities to vegetable oils, and the biodiesel properties were within the permissible limits of international standards.

Synergistic effect of glucose and glycerol accelerates microbial lipid production from low-cost substrates by Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosum

Zhiwei Gong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the lipid production of Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosum from glucose, glycerol, and their mixture. The co-existence of glucose and glycerol improved lipid productivity, possibly due to the enhanced substrate transportation efficiency. Additionally, co-utilization of waste paper enzymatic hydrolysates and crude glycerol resulted in high lipid content and yield.

Improving lipid production capacity of new natural oleaginous yeast: Pichia cactophila firstly

Derya Berikten et al.

Summary: Pichia cactophila was found to be the most efficient yeast strain for microbial lipid production, with optimized conditions leading to a significant increase in lipid content with fatty acid composition similar to vegetable oils. This suggests potential for the microbial lipid of P. cactophila as a raw material in biodiesel production and for further research.

Valorization of palm oil mill wastewater for integrated production of microbial oil and biogas in a biorefinery approach

Yasmi Louhasakul et al.

Summary: This study presents an integrated biorefinery concept combining aerobic fermentation of palm oil mill effluents for lipid production and anaerobic digestion for biogas production. Pasteurization of the wastewater before fermentation is essential for efficient lipid production. The study also found dominant bacteria and archaea responsible for acetate, butyrate, hydrogen, and biomethane production in the biogas reactor.
