On the Thermal Stresses Due to Weathering in Natural Stones

William Hideki Ito et al.

Summary: While chemical interactions in natural stones have been extensively studied, physical weathering due to temperature variations has recently been recognized as a key mechanism of degradation and is now incorporated in international standards. This study presents a method to calculate thermal stresses induced by daily temperature variations and validates the methodology through in-situ measurements, showing a good correlation between theoretical and real temperatures.

Seismic and hydromechanical performance of rammed earth walls under changing environmental conditions

Juan P. Villacreses et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of suction and climatic conditions on the performance of rammed earth walls under seismic movements. Experimental and numerical results show that the hydric state of the walls significantly affects their relative accelerations, with walls in wet state experiencing 84% higher accelerations compared to dry state.

The deep learning method applied to the detection and mapping of stone deterioration in open-air sanctuaries of the Hittite period in Anatolia

Ergun Hatir et al.

Summary: This study developed a model using the Mask R-CNN algorithm to automatically detect and map deterioration in archaeological heritage sites. Trained on 2460 images of Yazilikaya monuments in the Hattusa archaeological site, the model was able to successfully distinguish deterioration from other anomalies and apply successfully in monuments in different regions.

Geotechnical modelling of the climate change impact on world heritage properties in Alexandria, Egypt

Sayed Hemeda

Summary: Alexandria, one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Mediterranean, is at risk of coastal flooding and erosion due to rising sea levels. This research focuses on the geotechnical and structural damage mechanisms of the Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa and El-Shatbi Necropolis in Alexandria, which are at low elevation and vulnerable to sea level rise. The study aims to investigate the behavior of soft rock/hard soil under groundwater intrusions and contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage by accurately analyzing geotechnical problems and structural failure mechanisms. Groundwater infiltration plays a significant role in the mechanical properties of rocks and soils during various stages of numerical analysis.

A multi-analytical study of historical coated plaster surfaces: the examination of a nineteenth-century V&A cast of a tombstone

Valentina Risdonne et al.

Summary: A multi-analytical study was conducted to characterise historical coated plaster surfaces, focusing on the surface coatings of a nineteenth-century plaster cast of a tombstone. Various analytical techniques were used, revealing the stratigraphy and composition of the coatings. The organic medium used for the surface coating was identified as a diterpenic resin containing silicon, aluminium and traces of other inorganic elements.

Salt Weathering of Natural Stone: A Review of Comparative Laboratory Studies

Carlos Alves et al.

Summary: Natural stone is crucial in historical heritage and contemporary works, but soluble salts are the main erosive agent in the built environment. Comparative studies on the same rock type exposed to different salt solutions mostly confirm the major impact of sodium sulphate, with exceptions. The effects of sodium chloride and calcium sulphate also deserve specific attention.
