Uncoupled changes in phytoplankton biomass and size structure in the western tropical Atlantic

Gabriel Bittencourt Farias et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the thermohaline structure plays a predominant role in phytoplankton dynamics in the Southwestern Tropical Atlantic, regardless of seasonal changes. While the biomass increase in fall was significantly promoted by the shallowing of the thermocline and nutricline, with a 3-fold higher increase observed around oceanic islands.

Combined Generalized Additive model and Random Forest to evaluate the influence of environmental factors on phytoplankton biomass in a large eutrophic lake

Jinpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the drivers and response relationships of phytoplankton biomass variations in Lake Okeechobee using nonlinear methods. Results showed spatial heterogeneity in phytoplankton biomass distribution and a three-peak-two-valley variation trend over time. The importance of inorganic nutrients and light availability factors as predictors of phytoplankton biomass was highlighted at both lake-wide and local scales.

Temporal distribution patterns of phytoplankton and their drivers in Lake Poyang (China)-A monthly study from 2011 to 2019

Lili Xiong et al.

Summary: The hydrological conditions in Lake Poyang are complex due to its connection with the Yangtze River, leading to unique drivers of phytoplankton distribution. Phytoplankton density has been increasing annually, with water temperature, water flow velocity, and Secchi depth identified as key drivers. Changes in dominant genera are influenced by nutrients and water flow velocity, with decreases in nutrient concentrations observed in recent years.

Structural and functional variations of phytoplankton communities in the face of multiple disturbances

Jun R. Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of disturbances on phytoplankton community structure and function in subtropical reservoirs, finding a positive correlation between community turnover and disturbance frequency, as well as negative correlations between resource use efficiency of cyanobacteria and diatoms with their community evenness. Multiple environmental disturbances play crucial roles in shaping the structure and functioning of plankton communities in subtropical reservoirs.

Phosphorus utilization by phytoplankton in the Yellow Sea during spring bloom: Cell surface adsorption and intracellular accumulation

Jie Jin et al.

Summary: Phosphorus utilization by phytoplankton in the Yellow Sea involves intracellular storage and cell surface adsorption, contributing to rapid biomass accumulation during spring blooms. Variations in cell-associated P content depend on phytoplankton species and seawater parameters. Luxury P consumption enhances P accumulation and internalization of bioavailable P pools during active growth.
