Effect of maturity stage on yield, morphological characteristics, and feed value of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] cultivars

M. E. Khalilian et al.

Summary: Sorghum is an important forage crop in arid and semiarid regions, and its yield and nutritive value are influenced by the harvesting stage. In this study, sorghum cultivars were evaluated for their forage potential at different stages of harvesting. The results showed that harvesting between the grain soft dough and grain hard dough stages would result in high forage yield and quality. Among the cultivars, cv. Mashhad-1 exhibited the highest dry matter and protein yield, as well as high metabolizable energy, digestible organic matter, and crude protein content, making it a superior genotype.

Association of fibre degradation with ruminal dissolved hydrogen in growing beef bulls fed with two types of forages

Summary: The study found that the fiber of CS silage was more easily degraded by rumen microorganisms and that feeding CS diet led to a decreased ruminal dH(2) concentration, which may aid in fiber degradation and growth of fibrolytic micro-organisms in the rumen.

Development changes in multi-scale structure and functional properties of waxy corn starch at different stages of kernel growth

Bo Zheng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the structural and functional properties of starch isolated from waxy corn at different stages of kernel growth. Results showed changes in starch granules' surface smoothness, molecular mass, particle size, viscosity, and amylose content. These changes were related to variations in pasting temperature, peak viscosity, and breakdown values, as well as contents of slowly digestible starch and resistant starch.

Effects of dietary forage to concentrate ratio on nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation and rumen bacterial composition in Angus cows

Summary: The study found that increasing concentrate levels in the diet led to higher average daily gain and ammonia nitrogen concentration in Angus cows, but lower acetate to propionate ratio and neutral detergent fiber digestibility. This was also associated with changes in serum markers and rumen microbial composition.
