Neoplasia and Tumor-Like Lesions in Pet Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus): A Retrospective Analysis of Cases Between 1995 and 2019

Summary: The prevalence and age distribution of tumors in pet rabbits are largely unknown. Previous studies on laboratory rabbits suggested a low tumor prevalence in young adult animals. However, in a retrospective analysis of archived pet rabbit samples, tumor types and prevalence were found to vary significantly with respect to age, revealing some differences from previous studies on laboratory rabbits.

Summary: Through analyzing data from veterinary surgeries and pathological reports, the study found that integumental tumours were the most common neoplasms in pet hamsters, followed by hematopoietic system tumours. Further research revealed that the number of Syrian hamsters affected by tumours seemed to be lower compared to dwarf hamsters.

Summary: With an increasing number of pet rabbits reaching their natural lifespan, rabbit oncology is gaining more attention. However, rabbit tumors are less covered in recent textbooks. This study reported 1238 cases of neoplastic and non-neoplastic masses in rabbit tissue, with skin masses and mammary neoplasms being the most common. Other tumors included those in the female reproductive tract and the alimentary tract, but were less frequent in the cases examined.
