Insight into maize gene expression profiles responses to symbiotic bacteria derived from Helicoverpa armigera and Ostrinia furnacalis

Summary: In this study, four bacterial strains isolated from the regurgitation fluid of Ostrinia furnacalis and Helicoverpa armigera were found to alter gene expression profiles in maize, affecting phytohormones, secondary metabolic pathways, transcription factors, MAPK, and plant-pathogen interaction-related genes. A total of 210 genes showed similar changes to those after insect feeding. Symbiotic insect bacteria participate in insect-plant interactions by changing maize gene expression profiles, which can potentially be used to develop anti-pest microbial agents through activating the plant defense system.

Summary: It is hypothesized that certain representatives of gut microflora in the Colorado potato beetle larvae mediate immune changes during dysbiosis, accelerating septicemia caused by Bacillus thuringiensis. Co-introduction of Citrobacter freundii with Bt led to an increase in larval mortality and tissue changes that significantly affect the cellular and humoral immunity of the insect, increasing its susceptibility to Bt.

Research conducted between 2010 and 2020 focused on genetic sexing strains, performance assessment, taxonomy, microbiota, genomics, radiation biology, and development of SIT packages. Challenges for the future include making SIT more cost-effective and addressing exotic species introduced by globalization and climate change.
