Navigation Along Windborne Plumes of Pheromone and Resource-Linked Odors

Ring T. Carde

Summary: Insects locate resources by flying upwind along odor plumes, which can persist even when diluted. They navigate by optomotor reaction but differences in odor concentration do not reliably indicate distance or direction to the odor source. The fine-scale structure and intermittency of odor plumes can influence the insect's upwind course.

Calmodulin regulates the olfactory performance in Drosophila melanogaster

Kalpana Jain et al.

Summary: The point mutation K339N in the Orco protein of fruit flies was found to reduce olfactory responses and impair odor localization performance. The mutation also eliminated the sensitization of olfactory sensory neurons to repeated weak odor stimuli.

Identification and characterization of CYPs induced in the Drosophila antenna by exposure to a plant odorant

Shane R. Baldwin et al.

Summary: Members of the cytochrome p450 (CYP) enzyme family are abundantly expressed in insect olfactory tissues and are thought to act as Odorant Degrading Enzymes (ODEs), but their specific role in olfactory signaling is not well understood. Research in Drosophila showed that although some CYP genes are transcriptionally induced by exposure to odorants, it does not necessarily mean they play a role in neuronal responses to that odorant. Certain CYPs with highly restricted expression patterns in the antenna may be promising candidates for further studies on olfactory CYP function.

Contribution of odorant binding proteins to olfactory detection of (Z)-11-hexadecenal in Helicoverpa armigera

Hao Guo et al.

Summary: The study shows that both HarmPBP1 and HarmPBP2 are involved in the detection of Z11-16:Ald in the male antennae of Helicoverpa armigera. HarmPBP1 and HarmPBP2 were found to be localized in cells surrounding the olfactory receptor neurons expressing HarmOR13. However, they have little effect on the selectivity and response kinetics of HarmOR13.

PKC98E Regulates Odorant Responses in Drosophila melanogaster

Seeta Poudel et al.

Summary: Drosophila odorant receptors consist of a common receptor subunit and tuning receptor subunits that confer odorant specificity to olfactory neuron responses. The phosphorylation state of the common receptor subunit is crucial for olfactory neuron responses, with PKC98E identified as the primary kinase responsible for this phosphorylation. Deletion of PKC98E from olfactory neurons affects peak odorant responses, indicating its importance in regulating olfactory neuron function.

The structural basis of odorant recognition in insect olfactory receptors

Josefina del Marmol et al.

Summary: Olfactory systems use a common strategy of combinatorial activation of olfactory receptors to detect a vast chemical world. The olfactory receptor MhOR5 from the jumping bristletail is a homotetrameric odorant-gated ion channel with broad chemical tuning, recognizing odorants through distributed hydrophobic interactions in a simple binding pocket. The receptor's sensitivity to odorants can be predictably altered by mutating individual residues in the binding pocket, shedding light on the molecular recognition mechanisms of the olfactory system.
