Assessment of Diversity Indices and DNA Barcoding of Parasitic Fauna Associated with Groundnut Leafminer (GLM), Aproaerema modicella Deventer (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)

K. Murugasridevi et al.

Summary: This study focused on the proper identification of parasitoid biocontrol agents using morphological and molecular techniques such as DNA barcoding. Biodiversity indices of parasitoid of groundnut leafminer were calculated, revealing the dominance of braconidae and Chelonus blackburni Cameron. The study also found that the rainfed zone had higher species diversity, richness, and evenness.

Ratio dependence effects of the parasitoid Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris on its associated host Tuta absoluta

Sahadatou Mama Sambo et al.

Summary: The invasion of Tuta absoluta from South America poses a significant threat to tomato production in Africa. Excessive use of pesticides to control this pest increases environmental and health risks. The parasitoid, Dolichogenedia gelechiidivoris, shows density-dependent behavior and could be effective in the biological control of T. absoluta. Offering a larger number of hosts to the female parasitoid can optimize its mass production.

Distribution, abundance and natural enemies of the invasive tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) in Kenya

G. Kinyanjui et al.

Summary: Tuta absoluta poses a serious threat to sustainable tomato production in Kenya, with a nationwide distribution and high levels of infestation and damage on tomato plants. However, the abundance and parasitism rates of natural enemies are currently too low to effectively control the field populations of the pest. These findings highlight the need for research and development of more effective and sustainable management strategies.

Can the Combined Use of the Mirid Predator Nesidiocoris tenuis and a Braconid Larval Endoparasitoid Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris Improve the Biological Control of Tuta absoluta?

Pascal Osa Aigbedion-Atalor et al.

Summary: Combining the predatory bug Nesidiocoris tenuis and the koinobiont solitary larval endoparasitoid Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris led to significantly higher efficacy in controlling the Tuta absoluta populations compared to using either natural enemy alone. N. tenuis preferentially targeted T. absoluta eggs, while D. gelechiidivoris focused on the early larval stages, showcasing the potential of combining mirid predators with koinobiont larval endoparasitoids for pest control.

Recruitment of native parasitoids of the tomato leaf miner Tuta absoluta (Meyrick 1917), (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in Senegal

Oumar Seydi et al.

Summary: A five-year field survey conducted in the main tomato-producing area in Senegal revealed seven parasitoid species associated with the tomato leaf miner T. absoluta, with Chelonus sp. being the dominant species. Larval parasitism rate was low but increased in the later years of the study, while parasitism was not affected by season but the diversity of parasitoids varied across years. This study is a preliminary step towards developing research and extension programs for conservation of natural enemies of T. absoluta in Senegal.

A deadly encounter: Alien invasive Spodoptera frugiperda in Africa and indigenous natural enemy, Cotesia icipe (Hymenoptera, Braconidae)

Samira Abuelgasim Mohamed et al.

Summary: The invasion and spread of Spodoptera frugiperda pose a significant threat to maize and sorghum farming communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Current efforts focused on synthetic pesticides are economically unviable and environmentally hazardous, making biological control using parasitoids like Cotesia icipe a more sustainable alternative. This study found that C. icipe preferentially targets younger larval stages of the pest and identified suitable habitats for its establishment in current and future climates.
