Microstructure change and corrosion resistance of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy subjected to pneumatic shot peening and ultrasonic shot peening

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of different shot peening methods on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of titanium alloys fabricated by selective laser melting were investigated. The results show that the ultrasonic shot peening samples have lower surface roughness and thicker hardened layers, as well as higher microhardness and better corrosion resistance.

Electrochemical behavior of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel in H2SO4 solution containing methionine as an amino acid

Mahdi Yeganeh et al.

Summary: In this study, the electrochemical and surface characteristics of 316L stainless steel manufactured by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) in a sulfuric acid solution containing methionine as a corrosion inhibitor were investigated. The results showed that methionine increased the charge transfer resistance, shifted E-corr toward the noble direction, and reduced the corrosion current density of the stainless steel. Adsorption isotherm revealed a physical-chemical interaction between the inhibitor and the alloy surface.

Evaluation of the corrosion performance of selective laser melted 17-4 precipitation hardening stainless steel in Ringer's solution

Mahdi Yeganeh et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the microstructure and corrosion resistance of selective laser-melted 17-4 precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel in comparison to wrought specimens. The results showed that the SLM process improved corrosion behavior and exhibited fine cellular/columnar microstructure. The improved electrochemical behavior of the SLMed alloy is attributed to reduced nonuniform distribution of alloying elements during solidification and lower anode/cathode area ratio compared to the wrought alloy.

Enhanced corrosion resistance of the surface modified Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy by ultrasonic shot peening

Pramod Kumar et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of the near-beta Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy was improved by ultrasonic shot peening treatment, primarily due to grain refinement and the increase in compressive residual stresses in the surface region. Passivation was most prominent after 30 seconds of USSP treatment, decreasing with longer durations.

The effect of post-processing heat treatment on the microstructure, residual stress and mechanical properties of selective laser melted 316L stainless steel

Qi Chao et al.

Summary: Additively manufactured 316L austenitic stainless steel was subjected to various heat treatments to study the evolution of residual stress, microstructure, and mechanical properties. Significant compressive residual stress was revealed in the as-built condition, with stress relief achieved at different temperatures. Microstructural changes, such as recrystallization, coarsening of nano-inclusions, and precipitation of embrittling phases, were observed during the heat treatment process, impacting the material's ductility and strength. The study established important relationships between heat treatment, properties, and microstructural changes for the structural application of SLM 316L.

Summary: This study found that 316L stainless steel processed through L-PBF exhibited better corrosion resistance in alkaline solution and in some cases even outperformed the wrought alloy. The L-PBF processed alloy showed a finer and more uniform microstructure, lower defect density, and lower corrosion current density compared to the wrought counterpart.
