Investigation of Coatings, Corrosion and Wear Characteristics of Machined Biomaterials through Hydroxyapatite Mixed-EDM Process: A Review

Md Al-Amin et al.

Summary: Various biomaterials such as 316L steel, magnesium-alloy, Ni-Ti, titanium-alloy, and cobalt-alloy are commonly used in biomedical applications due to their excellent mechanical characteristics and corrosion resistance, although they may sometimes be incompatible with the body. Surface coating is necessary to mitigate the release of contaminants, with hydroxyapatite powder (HAp) widely used for forming biocompatible coatings. The HAp added-EDM process has been shown to significantly improve coating properties, corrosion resistance, and biofunctions of biomaterials, highlighting the importance of these factors for biomaterial performance.

Analysis of hybrid HA/CNT suspended-EDM process and multiple-objectives optimization to improve machining responses of 316L steel

Md Al-Amin et al.

Summary: This research investigates the use of a HAp suspended-EDM process with CNT additives to improve machining performance of 316L steel, achieving a high material erosion rate while reducing tool erosion rate and surface roughness through process optimization. Significant determinants of machining responses were peak current, pulse-on time and HA/CNT quantity, leading to accurate predicted solution sets for enhanced biomedical applications of 316L steel.
