Characterizing devolatilized wood pellets for fluidized bed applications

Kolja Jarolin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior and microstructure of devolatilized wood pellets. The results show that devolatilized wood pellets have a stable but highly porous and fragile structure. The existing pore network in the raw conditions characterizes the final structure, and the resulting pore network dominates the mechanical behavior of the pellets. The study also suggests that breakage and attrition induced by mechanical stresses are likely to be as or even more important than primary fragmentation caused by the devolatilization process itself.

Linearization-based methods for the calibration of bonded-particle models

Kolja Jarolin et al.

Summary: Two methods for calibrating elastic material parameters of bonded-particle models are proposed in this work, based on classical mechanics principles. These methods allow for faster calibration than traditional trial and error strategies and can be used to check the consistency of the models. The first method linearizes the mathematical model and solves it in a matrix-vector formulation, while the second method further linearizes to calculate the elastic stiffness tensor directly, reducing computational costs significantly. Application of these methods in three case studies showed a significant reduction in calculation time.

Breakage behavior of biomass pellets: an experimental and numerical study

Hamid Gilvari et al.

Summary: The presence of fines and dust in biomass pellets during transportation and storage causes problems in the supply chain. To study the breakage behavior of pellets, understanding the behavior of individual pellets is crucial before investigating the bulk materials. A calibrated numerical model using DEM was introduced to predict the breakage behavior of pellets under compression tests.

Simulations of biomass pyrolysis using glued-sphere CFD-DEM with 3-D intra-particle models

Liqiang Lu et al.

Summary: This research utilized a glued-sphere computational fluid dynamic discrete element method to investigate the effects of biomass particle shapes and sizes on pyrolysis. The study revealed significant influences of surface areas and mass distributions on interphase heat transfer and chemical reactions, with neglectable intra-particle heat transfer for certain conditions. Different reactor types were simulated to analyze conversion distributions, showing the best balance between uniform and fast conversion in the fluidized bed.
