Radium Ion Optical Clock

C. A. Holliman et al.

Summary: We report the first operation of a Ra+ optical clock, demonstrating its performance in terms of frequency stability and systematic uncertainty. The clock allows for the measurement of the ratio of Lande ' g-factors and can improve limits on the time variation of the fine structure constant in optical frequency comparisons. Additionally, the clock has features that make it suitable for portable optical clock applications.

Comparing ultrastable lasers at 7 x 10-17 fractional frequency instability through a 2220 km optical fibre network

M. Schioppo et al.

Summary: This study reports a comparison of two geographically separated ultrastable lasers over a 2220 km optical fibre link, achieving a fractional frequency instability of 7×10-17. These results are significant for the dissemination of ultrastable light to improve the performance of remote optical clocks.

Summary: Quantum gravity introduces a new source of combined parity violation in gauge theories, which compromises the standard axion solution to the strong CP problem. It is argued that the ultimate solution to the strong CP problem may involve at least one additional axion particle.

Feebly-interacting particles: FIPs 2020 workshop report

P. Agrawal et al.

Summary: With the establishment and maturation of experimental programs focusing on new physics at the LHC, there is a growing interest in exploring the physics of light and feebly-interacting particles as complementary to New Physics at the TeV scale and beyond. FIPs 2020, the first workshop dedicated to this field, brought together experts from various experiments and astrophysics communities to discuss experimental progress and theory models, aiming to enhance collaboration across different fields.

Direct limits for scalar field dark matter from a gravitational-wave detector

Sander M. Vermeulen et al.

Summary: This study explores the direct search for scalar field dark matter using a gravitational-wave detector, setting new constraints by excluding signals produced through direct coupling of dark matter. The research shows that scalar field dark matter can be investigated or constrained with direct searches using gravitational-wave detectors, highlighting the potential of quantum-enhanced interferometry for dark matter detection.

Theoretical bounds on dark matter masses

Xavier Calmet et al.

Summary: In this letter, we demonstrate that quantum gravity imposes limitations on the masses of dark matter candidates, determined by their spins and interactions in the dark matter sector. For singlet scalar dark matter, the mass range lies between 10(-3) eV and 10(7) eV, with the lower bound from restrictions on fifth force interactions and the upper bound from the dark matter candidate's lifetime.

Stochastic fluctuations of bosonic dark matter

Gary P. Centers et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that constraints inferred from several previous null experiments searching for ultralight bosonic dark matter were overestimated by factors ranging from 3 to 10, due to not considering the characteristic coherence time of the dark matter field. Laboratory measurements need to take into account the stochastic nature of such a virialized ultralight field when interpreting data.

Implications of quantum gravity for dark matter

Summary: This essay demonstrates that quantum gravity and the spin-statistics theorem have interesting implications for dark matter candidates, imposing lower bounds on bosonic and fermionic masses, as well as influencing the decay of dark matter particles. By comparing their lifetimes with the age of the universe, upper bounds on their masses are determined.

Lorentz symmetry in ghost-free massive gravity

V. Alan Kostelecky et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the role of Lorentz symmetry in ghost-free massive gravity, particularly in approximately Minkowski spacetime. It examines the static extrema and saddle points of the potential, as well as constructs solutions both preserving and breaking Lorentz invariance. The investigation also explores gravitational waves in the linearized theory, showing deviations in the fiducial metric leading to interesting phenomena such as pentarefringence and superluminal modes.

Searches for beyond-Riemann gravity

V. Alan Kostelecky et al.

Summary: Many effective field theories describing gravity cannot be derived from Riemann geometry or its extensions, but may instead emerge from another geometry or have a nongeometric basis. The study investigates the Lagrange density for a broad class of such theories and derives the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian, focusing on anomalous spin-gravity couplings. Some constraints on coefficients are extracted from existing data, and prospects for future experimental studies are discussed.

Backgrounds in gravitational effective field theory

V. Alan Kostelecky et al.

Summary: This study investigates effective field theories describing gravity coupled to matter with operators of arbitrary mass dimensions, including violations of local Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance while preserving internal gauge symmetries. Theoretical frameworks for these violations, including transformations in various spacetimes and symmetry breaking implications, are discussed. Techniques for constructing effective operators and explicit expressions for terms containing operators of mass dimension six or less in the effective action for general relativity coupled to the Standard Model are presented. Special cases, such as Einstein-Maxwell effective field theories and scalar coupling constants, are also considered.
