Origin and Age of Magmatism in the Northern Philippine Sea Basins

Osamu Ishizuka et al.

Summary: The study reveals the existence of andesitic magmatism in the oldest part of the northern Philippine Sea plate, which is not associated with subduction but possibly related to rifting. Late Eocene basaltic magmatism may be associated with asthenospheric mantle during the final stage of basin spreading.

Subduction initiation from the earliest stages to self-sustained subduction: Insights from the analysis of 70 Cenozoic sites

Serge Lallemand et al.

Summary: The study explores subduction initiation during the Cenozoic and finds that new subduction zones regularly form with a success rate of over 70%, mainly at transition areas between ocean and continent, plateau, or volcanic arc. The success of the process relies on lithospheric forces, especially in the early stages.

Dynamic slab segmentation due to brittle-ductile damage in the outer rise

T. Gerya et al.

Summary: The study reveals that bending-induced plate damage can lead to slab weakening and segmentation at the outer-rise region, with a strong feedback between brittle and ductile damage localization. This phenomenon explains the subduction dichotomy, development of large-offset normal faults near trenches, occurrence of segmented seismic velocity anomalies, distinct interfaces within subducted slabs, and localized intraplate areas of reduced effective viscosity.
