Octopus djinda (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae): a new member of the Octopus vulgaris group from southwest Australia

Michael D. Amor et al.

Summary: A new octopus species, O. djinda, has been described from southwest Australia, showing morphological and genetic differences from previously classified O. tetricus. DNA barcoding successfully differentiated between east and west coast forms based on sucker counts, with O. djinda supporting a sustainable fishery and receiving certification from the Marine Stewardship Council. This taxonomic description provides formal recognition for the common octopus in southwest Australia, facilitating appropriate fisheries management.

Echinocephalus inserratus sp. n. (Nematoda: Gnathostomatidae) from the stingray Pastinachus ater (Dasyatidae) and new records of congeneric and some other nematode larvae from teleost fishes off New Caledonia

Frantisek Moravec et al.

Summary: A new nematode parasite Echinocephalus inserratus sp. n. is described from the spiral valve of the broad cowtail stingray Pastinachus ater from off New Caledonia. Encapsulated larvae of Echinocephalus spp. were found in six species of teleost fishes, serving as paratenic hosts, and co-parasitising larvae of Ascarophis sp. and Hysterothylacium sp. were also collected from P. fuscus. These findings represent new host and geographical records.

The occurrence and clinical importance of infectious stage of Echinocephalus (Nematoda: Gnathostomidae) larvae in selected Australian edible fish

Shokoofeh Shamsi et al.

Summary: Cases of gnathostomiasis in Australia were reported, but doubts were raised over the validity of diagnoses due to the absence of Gnathostoma spp. in Australian fish. Research indicated that parasites belonging to the Echinocephalus genus, morphologically similar to Gnathostoma, may be the potential causative agents of gnathostomiasis in Australia.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
