Human Herpesvirus 6 Encephalitis in Immunocompetent and Immunocompromised Hosts

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the clinical, radiologic, and biological features associated with HHV-6 encephalitis in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts. A total of 45 patients were included in the study, with HHV-6 encephalitis more commonly diagnosed in infants or children with mild symptoms during primary HHV-6 infection among immunocompetent hosts, and in adolescents/adults with hematologic conditions and various neurological symptoms among immunocompromised hosts. The CSF/blood replication ratio >1 was a specific feature of HHV-6 encephalitis in immunocompromised patients, especially in those lacking radiologic evidence of limbic involvement.
