Imidacloprid elimination by O3 and O3/UV: kinetics study, matrix effect, and mechanism insight

Busra Sonmez Baghirzade et al.

Summary: The study found that ozonation and photo-ozonation are effective methods for removing IMI from water, with photo-ozonation being more efficient. IMI is primarily degraded by OH center dot via an indirect mechanism.

Photocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid using semiconductor hybrid nano-catalyst: kinetics, surface reactions and degradation pathways

R. Garg et al.

Summary: The study focused on the degradation and mineralization of imidacloprid in surface waters using hybrid nano-catalysts g-C3N4/ZnO with different compositions. The g-C3N4/ZnO (20:80) catalyst showed the highest degradation efficiency (95.6%) under UV-C light intensity of 15 W/m(2) and pH 7, attributed to its improved surface area, lower bandgap, and lower photoluminescence intensity. Analysis using LC-MS revealed the formation of various by-products during the degradation process.

Matrix composition during ozonation of N-containing substances may influence the acute toxicity towards Daphnia magna

Vanessa Wirzberger et al.

Summary: Micropollutants in wastewater treatment plants may form transformation products (TP) through ozonation, which can have ecotoxicological concerns. This study investigated the acute toxicity of parent substances and TPs on Daphnia magna, showing that complex water matrices can influence the toxicity of TPs.

Photo-biodegradation of imidacloprid under blue light-emitting diodes with bacteria and co-metabolic regulation

Punniyakotti Elumalai et al.

Summary: This study identified three bacteria capable of photo-biodegradation of neonicotinoids from agricultural field soils. Under different colors of LED lights, blue LEDs showed the highest efficiency in supporting the biodegradation of IMI. The intermediate metabolites of IMI under photo-biodegradation conditions were found to be non-toxic to the environment.

Summary: Current research is increasingly focusing on the ecotoxicity of anthropogenic micro-pollutants and their degradation and transformation products. Using QSAR analysis, it became possible to predict the ecotoxicity of individual substances with mere computational effort. Overall, lower toxicity against green algae and invertebrates was predicted for the transformation products.

Pesticides in Drinking Water-A Review

Muhammad Syafrudin et al.

Summary: The presence of pesticides in water bodies poses potential health risks to humans, with traditional treatment methods being costly and potentially causing secondary pollution. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are seen as a cleaner and more effective treatment technology for water contaminated with pesticides.

Advanced oxidation processes in the removal of organic substances from produced water: Potential, configurations, and research needs

Marco Coha et al.

Summary: Produced water is the main by-product of fossil fuel extraction activities, which requires adequate treatment to purify its quality for recycling or discharge. Advanced oxidation processes are increasingly studied for the removal of organic pollutants in produced water, including various methods such as Fenton-based oxidation. Different oxidation methods can be used as a polishing stage or as an auxiliary treatment for further biological processes and membrane separation, with the potential for combination within the same system.

Summary: The study shows that using Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) can more effectively remove pharmaceuticals from waterbodies. Photo-induced irradiation enhanced by hydrogen peroxide accelerates degradation more than ozonation, leading to complete elimination, and predictions of ecotoxicity have been improved.

Photocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid in the flat-plate photoreactor under UVA and simulated solar irradiance conditions-The influence of operating conditions, kinetics and degradation pathway

Kristina Babic et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of TiO2 photocatalysts modified by defect engineering methods. The immobilized photocatalyst layer was prepared and tested for the degradation of imidacloprid in an aqueous solution. The study investigated the effects of different operating variables on the photocatalytic performances, studied the hydrodynamic behavior of the flat-plate photoreactor, and proposed a possible pathway for the photodegradation of imidacloprid in aqueous phase after irradiation with UVA.
