Identification and characterization of magnetotactic Gammaproteobacteria from a salt evaporation pool, Bohai Bay, China

Peiyu Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, two magnetotactic Gammaproteobacteria strains were identified from a salt evaporation pool in Bohai Bay, eastern China. One strain, FZSR-2, was found to be the same species as previously discovered strains SHHR-1 and SS-5, while the other strain, FZSR-1, represents a novel species. The research highlights a relationship between magnetite morphology within the strains and the salinity of their environment.

Key Signatures of Magnetofossils Elucidated by Mutant Magnetotactic Bacteria and Micromagnetic Calculations

Matthieu Amor et al.

Summary: Magnetotactic bacteria produce magnetic nanoparticles that contribute to the magnetization of sediments and rocks. This study shows that the observed magnetofossil fingerprints are produced by a combination of single-stranded and multi-stranded chains, and that the anisotropy of the chains is the key factor for distinguishing magnetofossils from other natural magnetite particles. The characteristics of the magnetofossils depend on the proportion of magnetosomes and the relative abundances of single-stranded and multi-stranded chains. This research has important implications for paleoclimatology, paleontology, and phylogenetics, and provides reference data for distinguishing different MTB lineages and sources of magnetite particles.

Intracellular amorphous Ca-carbonate and magnetite biomineralization by a magnetotactic bacterium affiliated to the Alphaproteobacteria

Caroline L. Monteil et al.

Summary: Bacteria can synthesize a variety of non-biological precipitates with different chemical compositions and structures within cells, including magnetic particles and calcium carbonate granules. Research has shown that the amorphous calcium carbonate granules formed by these bacteria are contained within membrane-delimited vesicles. Analysis of a new genus of Alphaproteobacteria revealed atypical structure of the magnetosome gene cluster, and the bacteria consume energy to maintain an environment suitable for calcium carbonate granule formation.

Biodiversity of magnetotactic bacteria in the tropical marine environment of Singapore revealed by metagenomic analysis

Shi Ming Tan et al.

Summary: Most studies on the diversity of magnetotactic bacteria have focused on samples from the Northern or Southern hemispheres, neglecting the tropical Asia region near the equator. This study used metagenomics to explore the diversity of MTB in the marine environment of Singapore and found novel taxa that cannot be classified at the species level. The relative abundance of MTB in Singapore's marine environment was lower compared to other regions, with the genera Magnetovibrio and Desulfamplus being dominant.

A Multi-Proxy Approach to Unravel Late Pleistocene Sediment Flux and Bottom Water Conditions in the Western South Atlantic Ocean

G. L. Mathias et al.

Summary: The study reveals that sediments in marine sediment core GL-1090 from the southwestern South Atlantic Ocean are primarily sourced from the Plata River in southeastern South America and transported northward by the Brazilian Coastal Current, with delivery modulated by sea-level oscillations. Terrigenous sediment input significantly increased during periods of low sea level, while variations in biogenic magnetite content following glacial-interglacial cycles were observed based on environmagnetic parameters.

Wensi Zhang et al.

Summary: Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are a group of widespread microbes in aquatic environments that play key roles in global iron and sulfur cycling. This study identified two novel MTB populations within the Nitrospirae phylum through metagenomic analyses, revealing their ability to form abundant magnetosomal crystals and providing insights into their metabolic potential in distinct microenvironments. Additionally, a conserved magnetosome gene cluster was identified across Nitrospirae MTB genomes, suggesting its adaptive roles in these bacteria.

Summary: The Verwey transition temperature in magnetite shows a bimodal distribution, with most lithological subsets having a peak around 120 K and one or more additional peaks at lower temperatures.
