Lactobacillus plantarum alleviates irradiation-induced intestinal injury by activation of FXR-FGF15 signaling in intestinal epithelia

Yong-Ping Jian et al.

Summary: Abdominal irradiation can disrupt the intestinal mucosal barrier and lead to severe intestinal infection and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes. The role of intestinal microbiota in radiation-induced intestinal injury is still largely unknown. However, studies have shown that alterations in the composition of the microbiota, particularly a reduction in Lactobacillus, play a critical role in the development of intestinal injury following irradiation.

Dysbiosis of Gut Microbiota Is Associated With the Progression of Radiation-Induced Intestinal Injury and Is Alleviated by Oral Compound Probiotics in Mouse Model

Tian-Shu Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that dysbiosis of gut microbiota occurs in acute radiation-induced intestinal injury, varying with radiation dose and persisting until the recovery stage. Administration of probiotics can improve survival duration, alleviate intestinal epithelial injury, and partially restore gut microbiota diversity in mice.

Summary: This study identified an anti-ceramide 6B5 single-chain variable fragment (scFv) that mitigated mouse lethality after nuclear attack, initiating tissue repair and promoting survival. Successful preclinical development may lead to inclusion of anticeramide 6B5 scFv in the Strategic National Stockpile for distribution after radiation catastrophe.

The Impact of Gut Microbiota on Radiation-Induced Enteritis

Yongping Jian et al.

Summary: Gut microbiota dysbiosis plays a crucial role in the development of radiation enteritis, affecting intestinal epithelial barrier function and inflammatory responses. The correction of microbiome through probiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and antibiotics could be an effective strategy for the prevention and treatment of radiation-induced enteritis. The gut microbiota composition, particularly the decrease of beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, and increase of harmful bacteria like Escherichia coli, is closely related to the severity of radiation enteritis.

Dichotomic Potency of IFNγ Licensed Allogeneic Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Animal Models of Acute Radiation Syndrome and Graft Versus Host Disease

Raghavan Chinnadurai et al.

Summary: MSCs are being tested as a cell therapy in clinical trials for inflammatory disorders, but suitable preclinical animal models are rare. In this study, two robust animal models of immune pathology were introduced to study the effect of IFN gamma primed bone marrow derived MSCs in acute radiation syndrome and graft versus host disease. The results showed that infused IFN gamma primed allogeneic MSCs protect against lethality from ARS, but not GvHD.

Yusook Chung et al.

Summary: This study developed an effective bacterial drug delivery system for colorectal cancer therapy using the lactic acid bacterium Pediococcus pentosaceus, which significantly reduced tumor volume and inhibited tumor growth in mouse models. The synthetic probiotic also modulated gut microbiota and alleviated chemically induced dysbiosis, demonstrating the potential of cell-based designer biopharmaceuticals for treating CRC and restoring impaired microbiota.
