Olive Oil Improves While Trans Fatty Acids Further Aggravate the Hypomethylation of LINE-1 Retrotransposon DNA in an Environmental Carcinogen Model

Laszlo Szabo et al.

Summary: DNA methylation plays a crucial role in mammalian development and genomic stability. Aberrant changes in DNA methylation are associated with malignant tumor tissues and aging. Consuming extra virgin olive oil shows preventive effects against age-related diseases and cancer, while consuming trans fatty acids increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. This study investigated the DNA methylation pattern of the LINE-1 retrotransposon in mouse liver, kidney, and spleen, and found that environmental carcinogen DMBA and its combination with trans fatty acids caused significant hypomethylation, which was counteracted by the consumption of extra virgin olive oil.

Oleanolic Acid Suppressed DMBA-Induced Liver Carcinogenesis through Induction of Mitochondrial-Mediated Apoptosis and Autophagy

Samar Hosny et al.

Summary: Oleanolic acid effectively suppresses DMBA-induced liver carcinogenesis by modulating apoptosis, autophagy, and inflammation, as well as inhibiting angiogenesis and proliferation. It also improves liver function and reduces AFP levels, showing potential as a natural anti-cancer agent.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

In vivo effects of olive oil and trans-fatty acids on miR-134, miR-132, miR-124-1, miR-9-3 and mTORC1 gene expression in a DMBA-treated mouse model

Richard Molnar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of olive oil and TFAs on the expression patterns of miRs and mTOR in mouse liver, spleen, and kidney. Olive oil showed protective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects, while TFAs exhibited damaging, inflammatory, and carcinogenic properties. The results suggest the presence of negative feedback regulatory mechanisms between these dietary components.

The effects of flavonoids, green tea polyphenols and coffee on DMBA induced LINE-1 DNA hypomethylation

Laszlo Szabo et al.

Summary: Our study revealed that chemopreventive substances have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties and regulate molecular biological signaling pathways; they can increase glutathione levels, induce antioxidant enzymes, decrease free radical damage caused by DMBA, and ultimately increase the activity of DNA methyltransferase enzymes.
