Exosomes derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells protect the injured spinal cord by inhibiting pericyte pyroptosis

Yan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study found that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes can protect pericytes by inhibiting pyroptosis and improving blood-spinal cord barrier integrity, promoting the survival of neurons and the extension of nerve fibers, and ultimately improving motor function in rats with spinal cord injury.

Neural Differentiation of Human Dental Mesenchymal Stem Cells Induced by ATRA and UDP-4: A Comparative Study

Anastasios E. Koutsoumparis et al.

Summary: The study found that dental mesenchymal stem cells can differentiate into neural-like cells using ATRA or UDP-4 treatment, exhibiting different patterns of differentiation. UDP-4 can be suggested as a new potent neural-differentiation-inducing compound, which, when combined with rhEPO-alpha, could be used for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Molecular Dynamics of Cytokine Interactions and Signalling of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Undergoing Directed Neural-like Differentiation

Jerran Santos et al.

Summary: Mesenchymal stem cells have the potential to differentiate into neural cells, which has been studied for years. Successful differentiation techniques exist, but there are gaps in knowledge regarding the role of cytokines and their downstream signaling processes. This study used bioinformatics analysis to examine cytokine expression and function during neurogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells.

Distinct Effects of the Hippocampal Transplantation of Neural and Mesenchymal Stem Cells in a Transgenic Model of Alzheimer's Disease

Henrique C. Campos et al.

Summary: This study found that NSC and MSC transplantation can reduce the number of A beta plaques in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice and increase the polarization of M2 microglia, indicating an anti-inflammatory effect of stem cell transplantation. NSC also reversed hyperlocomotor activity and increased the number of microglia in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice. No impairment of short or long-term memory was observed in APP/PS1 mice. Overall, the study highlights the potential beneficial effects of transplanting NSC or MSC for AD treatment.

Improved Survival and Regeneration of Irradiated Mouse Neural Stem Cells after Co-Culturing with Non-Irradiated Mouse Neural Stem Cells or Mesenchymal Stem Cells from the Adipose Tissue

Summary: The study demonstrated that non-irradiated neural stem cells (NSC) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) can enhance the survival and clonogenic activity of irradiated NSC, while reducing the proportion of senescent cells. Factors secreted by these cells may provide a basis for developing treatments to prevent brain cell damage caused by radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.

Summary: The study aimed to cultivate MSC subpopulation with increased pluripotent and neural gene expression through a 3D spheroid culture system. Results showed that prolonged 3D culture led to increased senescence, decreased stemness and proliferation in MSC, but allowed for the selection of cells with elevated expression of neural markers indicating unique features.

Summary: The study investigated the therapeutic potential of neural stem cells derived from human primitive mesenchymal stem cells in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis mouse model of multiple sclerosis. The transplanted NSCs improved EAE symptoms more than MSCs, homed into the CNS, reduced immune infiltrates, modulated Treg and Th17 cell levels, enhanced myelination, and promoted neuroprotection and neurogenesis through upregulating genes involved in myelination and neuroprotection while downregulating inflammatory and astrogliosis genes.
