Mass spectrometry-based targeted proteomics for analysis of protein mutations

Tai-Tu Lin et al.

Summary: Mutations play a central role in cancer development, but proteomic analysis of mutations lags behind genomic analysis. Proteomic analysis of mutations has the potential to advance cancer biomarker development and the discovery of new therapeutic targets. Targeted proteomics using selected reaction monitoring and parallel reaction monitoring has advantages over global proteomics. Top-down proteomics, which directly analyzes intact proteins, is also a promising approach for analyzing protein mutations.

Multifunctionality of prostatic acid phosphatase in prostate cancer pathogenesis

Evgenia Alpert et al.

Summary: The study explored the role of human prostatic acid phosphatase (PAcP) in prostate cancer using a proteomics tool called signal sequence swapping. It identified three forms of PAcP with distinct functions, subcellular locations, and properties, one of which (PAcP)-P-PL was found to be correlated with early prostate cancer in clinical specimens. This method demonstrates analytical power and suggests new therapeutic strategies for prostate cancer.

Bioinformatic analysis of dysregulated proteins in prostate cancer patients reveals putative urinary biomarkers and key biological pathways

Tania Lima et al.

Summary: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common cancer among men, but detection through prostate-specific antigen has limitations. This study aimed to identify consistent molecular features and potential urinary biomarkers for PCa by comparing urinary and tissue proteomes to exclude interference from kidney and bladder cancer. The analysis revealed dysregulated molecular processes in urine from PCa patients, leading to the identification of candidate urinary biomarkers such as MSMB, KLK3, ITIH4, ITIH2, HPX, GP2, APOA2, and AZU1 proteins.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
