Combinatorial Therapeutic Approaches with Nanomaterial-Based Photodynamic Cancer Therapy

Yang Hao et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising method for therapeutically targeting primary tumors. However, it is not sufficient to completely eliminate deep tissue tumors on its own. Therefore, PDT can be combined with other treatment methods based on the characteristics and type of the tumor. Nanoparticles as delivery vehicles can overcome the limitations of traditional photosensitizers and enable the co-delivery of multiple therapeutic drugs.

Targeting immunogenic cancer cell death by photodynamic therapy: past, present and future

Razan Alzeibak et al.

Summary: The past decade has seen significant breakthroughs in cancer immunotherapy, with immunogenic cell death (ICD) emerging as a promising approach to eliminate tumor cells. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) can induce ICD, but its efficiency is reduced in hypoxic tumor environments. Future research may focus on strategies like oxygen-boosted PDT and nanotechnology to address this limitation.

Sustained Antiviral and Liver Protection by a Nasal Therapeutic Vaccine (NASVAC, Containing Both HBsAg and HBcAg) in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis B: 2-Year Follow-Up of Phase III Clinical Trial

Sheikh Mohammad Fazle Akbar et al.

Summary: The NASVAC vaccine showed safety and therapeutic efficacy in treatment-naive patients with chronic hepatitis B, with 33 out of 66 patients achieving HBV DNA clearance two years after treatment. The study also reported liver function improvement and no cases of cirrhosis development among patients receiving NASVAC therapy.

Nanomaterials-Based Photodynamic Therapy with Combined Treatment Improves Antitumor Efficacy Through Boosting Immunogenic Cell Death

Feiyang Jin et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of nanotechnology, photodynamic therapy is emerging as a novel non-invasive clinical treatment for specific cancers. Although induced cell death related to T cell-mediated antitumor immune responses through immunogenic cell death is promising, enhancing this immunogenic cell death for better efficacy remains a challenge.

Combining Photodynamic Therapy with Immunostimulatory Nanoparticles Elicits Effective Anti-Tumor Immune Responses in Preclinical Murine Models

Ruben Victor Huis In 't Veld et al.

Summary: Combining photodynamic therapy with immunostimulatory nanoparticles has shown strong anti-tumor responses in murine cancer models, activating tumor-specific CD8(+) T cell immune responses and altering the tumor microenvironment from immunosuppressed to pro-inflammatory. This combination therapy provides a rationale for the treatment of solid tumors with potential in situ vaccination strategies against cancer epitopes.
