Patterns of Cerebrospinal Fluid Alzheimer's Dementia Biomarkers in People Living with HIV: Cross-Sectional Study on Associated Factors According to Viral Control, Neurological Confounders and Neurocognition

Mattia Trunfio et al.

Summary: PLWH may have abnormal cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers associated with Alzheimer's disease, but not specifically related to HIV. The relationship between amyloid and tau proteins in PLWH seems to differ from that observed in AD patients.

Extracellular Amyloid Deposits in Alzheimer's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease: Similar Behavior of Different Proteins?

Nikol Jankovska et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the deposition of specific protein aggregates, which can be intracellular or extracellular, depending on the type of disease. Alzheimer's disease is defined by the extracellular plaques composed of amyloid beta-protein, while prionoses refer to plaques formed by amyloid prion protein. Both diseases involve extracellular deposits with signs of neuritic degeneration, indicating a potential role for amyloid protein toxicity.

HIV disease duration, but not active brain infection, predicts cortical amyloid beta deposition

Susan Morgello et al.

Summary: This study identified age and the APOE ε4 allele as risk factors for Aβ deposition in the brain; HIV+ status was shown to be protective while brain infection was not a predictor for Aβ in the overall sample. In the HIV+ population, predictors for Aβ were HIV disease duration and APOE alleles, not age. Furthermore, HIV disease duration replaced age as an independent risk factor for Aβ, indicating accelerated brain senescence associated with HIV.

Physiologically Relevant Concentrations of Dolutegravir, Emtricitabine, and Efavirenz Induce Distinct Metabolic Alterations in HeLa Epithelial and BV2 Microglial Cells

Joseph W. George et al.

Summary: The study found that DTG and FTC had different effects on mitochondrial function in HeLa and BV2 cells, suggesting that cell type-specific metabolic changes may contribute to the toxic side effects of these ARV drugs.
