The effect of COVID-19 on general anaesthesia rates for caesarean section. A cross-sectional analysis of six hospitals in the north-west of England

K. Bhatia et al.

Summary: The study found a significant decrease in the rate of general anaesthesia for caesarean section across six maternity units in the north-west of England during the peak of the pandemic. The conversion rate from regional to general anaesthesia also decreased during this period. The obstetric indications for caesarean sections remained stable while the overall caesarean section rate slightly increased.

The Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology Interdisciplinary Consensus Statement on Neuraxial Procedures in Obstetric Patients With Thrombocytopenia

Melissa E. Bauer et al.

Summary: A significant proportion of obstetric patients may have thrombocytopenia, leading anesthesiologists to carefully assess the risks and benefits of neuraxial procedures. Shared decision-making with patients based on individual risks and preferences is crucial in determining whether to proceed with such procedures.

Neonatal and early childhood outcomes following maternal anesthesia for cesarean section: a population-based cohort

Rachel Joyce Kearns et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of general anesthesia on neonatal and childhood development outcomes during cesarean section, finding that regardless of urgency, the use of general anesthesia is associated with neonatal resuscitation, low Apgar scores, and neonatal unit admission. The strongest associations were observed in non-urgent cases and at term. Additionally, there was a weak correlation between the use of general anesthesia in emergency cases and having <= 1 concern noted in developmental assessment at 2 years old.
