Relevance of sleep, pain cognition, and psychological distress with regard to pain in patients with burning mouth syndrome

Geun-Shin Lee et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the influence of sleep, psychological distress, and pain catastrophizing on the pain experience in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). The results showed that pain catastrophizing was positively correlated with pain interference, while psychological distress and sleep quality were not significantly related to pain experience. Therefore, targeting pain catastrophizing, particularly rumination and helplessness, may help reduce pain-related disability in BMS patients.

A systematic review of treatment for patients with burning mouth syndrome

Huann Lan Tan et al.

Summary: The review examined the short- and long-term effectiveness of different treatment strategies for burning mouth syndrome, finding that cognitive behaviour therapy, topical capsaicin and clonazepam, and laser therapy showed positive outcomes in both short- and long-term assessments. Further research is recommended to establish a standardized treatment protocol for burning mouth syndrome and assess new treatment options to reduce adverse reactions.

Analytical validation of an automated assay for the measurement of adenosine deaminase (ADA) and its isoenzymes in saliva and a pilot evaluation of their changes in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection

Lorena Franco-Martinez et al.

Summary: The study validated a commercially available automated assay for measuring total adenosine deaminase and its isoenzymes in saliva, showing high accuracy and precision. The assay was affected by certain virus inactivation methods, but chemical inactivation with Triton X-100 and NP-40 was tolerated. Individuals with COVID-19 infection exhibited higher levels of tADA and its isoenzymes in saliva, suggesting their potential use as non-invasive biomarkers.

Summary: The research suggests that burning mouth syndrome may be the result of a combination of peripheral and central neuropathies, with insufficient high-quality studies to definitively determine the etiology. Further research is needed to better understand the pathophysiology of BMS.
