Thyroid autoimmunity markers in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and controls

Jin Ju Kim et al.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence of autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) in Korean women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to age-matched controls. The results showed that the frequency of AITD did not differ significantly between the two groups. However, among women with PCOS, those with AITD had higher adiposity and insulin resistance index compared to those without AITD.

Summary: The study revealed that DNA hypomethylation regulates key genes associated with PCOS, and treatment of PCOS mouse models with a methyl donor corrected their defects. Methylome markers may serve as a possible diagnostic landmark for the condition.

Genetic Susceptibility to Joint Occurrence of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: How Far Is Our Understanding?

Natalia Zeber-Lubecka et al.

Summary: PCOS and HT are common endocrine disorders, with a higher prevalence of HT observed in women with PCOS. The simultaneous occurrence of both diseases is associated with a higher risk of severe metabolic and reproductive complications. Genetic factors strongly impact the pathogenesis of both PCOS and HT, with several susceptibility loci identified.

Summary: PCOS is the most common endocrine-metabolic disorder worldwide, associated with anovulation, mitochondrial dysfunctions, and hormonal disbalance; patients with PCOS have elevated levels of inflammatory markers, highlighting the need for further research to understand the pathogenesis.

Summary: Thyroid dysfunction is common in metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, with subclinical hypothyroidism worsening glycemic control in diabetic patients. Both thyroid dysfunction and diabetes increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

A Comparative Study on Insulin Secretion, Insulin Resistance and Thyroid Function in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome with and without Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Hongli Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that PCOS patients with HT have higher levels of insulin secretion and IR, as well as relatively lower thyroid function. It is suggested that thyroid function and autoimmune status should be evaluated in clinical practice for patients with PCOS.

Kris Poppe et al.

Summary: Severe thyroid dysfunction can lead to menstrual disorders and subfertility, potentially requiring assisted reproductive technology (ART) as a solution. Women with thyroid autoimmunity (TAI) should supplement with levothyroxine (LT4) before pregnancy. Regular thyroid function screening is recommended for women of subfertile couples undergoing ART.
