Ministernotomy compared with right anterior minithoracotomy for aortic valve surgery

Massimo Bonacchi et al.

Summary: This study compares the early and long-term outcomes of ministernotomy and right anterior minithoracotomy, the two main techniques used in minimally invasive aortic valve replacement. The results show that ministernotomy is associated with shorter operation time, decreased hospital stay, fewer postoperative complications, and lower mortality rates.

One-month recovery profile and prevalence and predictors of quality of recovery after painful day case surgery: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial

Bjorn Stessel et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the one-month recovery profile after painful day surgery, finding that type of surgery and postoperative pain level were significant predictors of poor/intermediate QOR. Different pain treatment regimens did not result in differences in recovery profile.

Minithoracotomy versus full sternotomy for isolated aortic valve replacement: Propensity matched data from two centers

Alexander Meyer et al.

Summary: The study compared outcomes of isolated aortic valve replacement through right anterolateral thoracotomy (RALT) to full median sternotomy (MS) and found significant differences in procedure times, cardiopulmonary bypass times, ventilation times, platelet transfusions, postoperative pneumonia rates, and hospitalization times. However, there were no significant differences in paravalvular leakage, postoperative stroke, atrial fibrillation, or 1-year mortality. The conclusion was that RALT is a safe approach with advantages in postoperative recovery, especially in pulmonary function.
