Effects of pain neuroscience education and dry needling for the management of patients with chronic myofascial neck pain: a randomized clinical trial

Pedro Valiente-Castrillo et al.

Summary: The study found that combining myofascial trigger point dry needling with pain neuroscience education was more effective in reducing neck pain and disability compared to dry needling alone. Additionally, the combination treatment led to greater improvements in kinesiophobia, pain anxiety, and pain-related beliefs.

Effects of Acupressure on Pain, Flexibility, and Substance P in Middle-Age Women with Chronic Neck Pain

Manjung Kim et al.

Summary: The 4-week acupressure intervention showed significant reduction in pain and improvement in neck disability and flexibility, suggesting that acupressure intervention is an effective treatment for chronic neck pain. Serum substance P was not significantly changed in both groups, but was significantly correlated with pain intensity.

Immediate Effects of Dry Needling and Myofascial Release on Local and Widespread Pressure Pain Threshold in Individuals With Active Upper Trapezius Trigger Points: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Fabio F. Stieven et al.

Summary: This study compared the immediate effects of dry needling (DN), myofascial release (MR), and sham DN on individuals with chronic neck pain. The results showed that both DN and MR were superior to sham DN in increasing pressure pain threshold and reducing neck pain intensity.

Dry Needling Adds No Benefit to the Treatment of Neck Pain: A Sham-Controlled Randomized Clinical Trial With 1-Year Follow-up

Eric Gattie et al.

Summary: This study found that adding trigger point dry needling or sham dry needling to a multimodal treatment program for mechanical neck pain did not significantly enhance outcomes in terms of pain and neck disability index. Dry needling should not be considered as a first-line approach for managing neck pain.

Back and neck pain: in support of routine delivery of non-pharmacologic treatments as a way to improve individual and population health

Steven Z. George et al.

Summary: Chronic back and neck pain are prevalent conditions that cause significant physical disability and cost worldwide. Clinical practice guidelines recommend non-pharmacologic treatments, but common care delivery models incentivize treatments that may not be in the best interests of patients. Coordinated efforts are needed to prioritize evidence-based non-pharmacologic treatment over low value care for back and neck pain.
