Summary: The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical significance of bone metabolism in the mandibular condyles in determining condylar resorptive changes. The results showed that condylar bone metabolism is closely related to resorptive activity, suggesting that SPECT/CT has important applications in the prognostic evaluation and determination of treatment strategies for idiopathic condylar resorption.

Do sex hormone imbalances contribute to idiopathic condylar resorption?

Summary: In this study, it was found that female ICR patients did not have significant differences in estrogen levels and other sex hormones compared to DD patients, while male ICR patients showed significantly higher levels of testosterone. Therefore, reduced serum E2 levels were not found to contribute to ICR, rather systemic testosterone disturbances were found to be related to the condition.

Effects of mechanical stress and deficiency of dihydrotestosterone or 17b-estradiol on Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis in mice

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the interaction between excessive mechanical stress and decreased sex hormones on Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA), and discovered new disease-susceptibility genes Angptl7 and Car1 involved in the onset mechanism of TMJ-OA. Experimental results indicated that these factors led to changes such as thinning of chondrocyte layers and increased number of osteoclasts in the mandibular condyles.

COL5A1 RS12722 Is Associated with Temporomandibular Joint Anterior Disc Displacement without Reduction in Polish Caucasians

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between the COL5A1 gene SNPs rs12722 and rs13946 and TMJ articular disc displacement without reduction (ADDwoR) in Polish Caucasian population, finding that the rs12722 SNP was significantly associated with ADDwoR. However, the rs13946 SNP showed no significant association with TMJ pathology in this study.
