Misalignment instability in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride

Xianqing Lin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the configuration with a slightly misaligned angle of 0.54 degrees and the AA/AA stacking has the lowest total energy in TBG/BN systems. The electronic structure evolves with different twist angles, showing narrower energy range of mini-bands and wider gaps from dispersive bands at critical angles. These findings agree with recent experimental observations.

Imaging Dual-Moire Lattices in Twisted Bilayer Graphene Aligned on Hexagonal Boron Nitride Using Microwave Impedance Microscopy

Xiong Huang et al.

Summary: This research directly observes the moire patterns in monolayer and twisted bilayer graphene aligned on hexagonal boron nitride using scanning microwave impedance microscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy. Two sets of moire superlattices with different periodicities are observed in the trilayer stack, with the smaller superlattice breaking the 6-fold rotational symmetry and exhibiting abrupt discontinuities at the boundaries of the larger superlattice. The study demonstrates that the hBN layer significantly modifies the moire superlattice of twisted bilayer graphene and analyzes its effect on the reciprocal space spectrum of the dual-moire system.

Evidence of Orbital Ferromagnetism in Twisted Bilayer Graphene Aligned to Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Aaron L. Sharpe et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a highly anisotropic ferromagnetism in twisted bilayer graphene, which is associated with a Chern insulating state. The anisotropy is likely orbital in nature rather than spin-induced, and a transition to a new phase may occur when an in-plane magnetic field exceeds 5 T.

Imaging orbital ferromagnetism in a moire Chern insulator

C. L. Tschirhart et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that electrons in moire flat band systems can break time-reversal symmetry, leading to a quantized anomalous Hall effect, with magnetism primarily orbital in nature. The study also reveals a significant change in magnetization as the chemical potential crosses the quantum anomalous Hall gap, consistent with the expected contribution of chiral edge states to the magnetization in an orbital Chern insulator. Additionally, mapping the spatial evolution of field-driven magnetic reversal shows reproducible micrometer-scale domains pinned to structural disorder.

Quasiperiodicity, band topology, and moire graphene

Dan Mao et al.

Summary: The alignment angle between magic angle twisted bilayer graphene and hBN substrate has a significant impact on both the band gap near charge neutrality and the behavior of electrical transport. The study also illustrates how a quasiperiodic potential can give rise to localization and change in transport properties of topological bands.

Electron-hole asymmetry and band gaps of commensurate double moire patterns in twisted bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride

Jiseon Shin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that spontaneous orbital magnetism can be observed in twisted bilayer graphene on nearly aligned hexagonal boron nitride substrate, with two types of commensurate double moire patterns favoring the narrowing of either the conduction or the valence bands. Calculations of optical conductivities demonstrate the impact of the BN substrate on the electron-hole asymmetric band structure and show the characteristics of photon conduction.

Moire commensurability and the quantum anomalous Hall effect in twisted bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride

Jingtian Shi et al.

Summary: The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is sometimes observed in twisted bilayer graphene (tBG) when nearly aligned with an encapsulating hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layer. The presence or absence of the QAH effect in individual devices is related to the commensurability between graphene/graphene and graphene/hBN moire patterns. The QAH effect is likely to occur when the moire patterns form a supermoire pattern near a commensurate point and have a percolating topologically nontrivial QAH phase.
