The ZAR1 resistosome is a calcium-permeable channel triggering plant immune signaling

Guozhi Bi et al.

Summary: The study showed that the activated ZAR1 protein can form pentameric complexes in the plasma membrane, exhibiting ion channel activity dependent on the conserved acidic residue Glu11. Pre-assembled ZAR1 resistosome readily incorporated into planar lipid-bilayers and displayed calcium-permeable cation-selective channel activity. Activation of ZAR1 in the plant cell resulted in Glu11-dependent Ca2+ influx, perturbation of subcellular structures, production of reactive oxygen species, and cell death.

Structure and activity of SLAC1 channels for stomatal signaling in leaves

Ya-nan Deng et al.

Summary: Stomata in leaves regulate gas exchange between the plant and its atmosphere. Phosphorylation of SLAC1 fine-tunes an equilibrium between basal and activated states, controlling the degree of stomatal opening. Cryo-EM analysis revealed structural features of SLAC1 that help understand its functional mechanism.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.
