Determining factors in the growth of MOF single crystals unveiled by in situ interface imaging

Jinli Han et al.

Summary: We traced the evolution of crystal interfaces during the solvothermal synthesis of MOFs using an in situ dark-field microscope. The precise measurement of growth rates on different crystal facets revealed the key factors influencing the crystal growth of various MOFs. We also discovered the influence of crystal interfaces on MOF growth, observing interruption, retreat, and recovery of the crystal interface.

Evolution of water structures in metal-organic frameworks for improved atmospheric water harvesting

Nikita Hanikel et al.

Summary: By conducting single-crystal x-ray diffraction experiments and density functional theory calculations, we deciphered the water-filling mechanism in the state-of-the-art water-harvesting metal-organic framework MOF-303. The evolution of water structures led us to modify the pores and precisely modulate the binding strength of water molecules, resulting in higher water productivity and tunability of regeneration temperature and enthalpy without compromising capacity and stability.
