Impact of hysteresis on caloric cooling performance

M. Masche et al.

Summary: Caloric cooling relies on reversible temperature changes in solids driven by external fields, with first-order phase transition materials showing promise but also hysteresis behavior that can degrade cooling performance. Numerical modeling quantified hysteresis impact on cooling performance, showing a reduction in efficiency as hysteresis entropy generation increases. Regenerator beds with low specific heat materials are less affected by hysteresis, with high specific heat materials showing decreased cooling performance.

Summary: Magnetocaloric materials with first-order magnetic phase transitions are low-cost working materials in magnetic heat pumping cycles, but hysteresis associated with first order transitions remains a challenge. A developed one-dimensional active magnetic regenerator model accounts for thermal and magnetic hysteresis, showing good agreement with experimental data. Predicted cooling power can be well estimated using cyclic measurements of adiabatic temperature change while disregarding hysteresis.
