Methods for suspensions of passive and active filaments

Simon F. Schoeller et al.

Summary: This study addresses the challenges of simulating the motion and deformation of flexible filaments by using quaternions for kinematics, implicit time integration to alleviate numerical stiffness, and quasi-Newton methods for solving nonlinear equations. The framework has been shown to work with different models and methods, and can be applied to low Reynolds number hydrodynamic interactions.

Intracellular coupling modulates biflagellar synchrony

Hanliang Guo et al.

Summary: Research has shown that basal coupling of flagella can achieve different synchronization modes by modulating flagellar activity levels or the strength of basal coupling, even in the absence of hydrodynamic coupling and flagellar compliance. A slip mode is observed when allowing for differential flagellar activity, and a dimensionless ratio introduced can predict the mode of synchrony, providing a way to query biological parameters that are not yet directly measurable experimentally. This study demonstrates a concrete route for cells to actively control the synchronization of their flagella.
