Interspecies bacterial competition regulates community assembly in the C. elegans intestine

Anthony Ortiz et al.

Summary: The study highlights that bacterial interspecies interactions play a dominant role in the assembly of the C. elegans microbiota, more so than host-microbe adaptation or gut environmental filtering.

Protective role of the Arabidopsis leaf microbiota against a bacterial pathogen

Christine M. Vogel et al.

Summary: Systematic analysis of bacterial isolates from the phyllosphere of Arabidopsis thaliana identified protective strains against the pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000, demonstrating direct bacteria-pathogen interactions. While some strains confer full protection through pattern-triggered immunity, others protect independently of plant immunity receptors. The study highlights the importance of identifying key genes of the microbiota for plant protection.

Positive interactions are common among culturable bacteria

Jared Kehe et al.

Summary: The study used an ultrahigh-throughput coculture platform to measure interactions among 20 soil bacteria in 40 carbon environments, finding that positive interactions were prevalent and primarily occurred as parasitisms between strains with differing carbon consumption profiles. In 85% of cases, non-growing strains were promoted by strongly growing strains, suggesting a simple positive interaction-mediated approach for cultivation, microbiome engineering, and microbial consortium design.

The plant NADPH oxidase RBOHD is required for microbiota homeostasis in leaves

Sebastian Pfeilmeier et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the maintenance of leaf microbiota homeostasis in Arabidopsis thaliana plants requires the involvement of the NADPH oxidase RBOHD, as its absence leads to enrichment of opportunistic pathogens. The composition of plant microbiota is greatly influenced by the plant immune system, highlighting the importance of both immune system and microbial community in maintaining plant health.

A general non-self response as part of plant immunity

Benjamin A. Maier et al.

Summary: Plants interact with microorganisms through a non-self response, involving a core set of genes and tryptophan-derived secondary metabolism. This defense adaptation strategy is consistently induced by diverse bacterial strains and contributes to host protection. Analysis of both transcriptome and metabolome output to multiple bacteria identifies a common non-self response to microorganisms in plants.
