Emerging Era of Electrolyte Solvation Structure and Interfacial Model in Batteries

Haoran Cheng et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that not only the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer but also the metal-ion solvation structure and interfacial model in the electrolyte significantly affect the performance of lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, the authors summarize recent studies on the importance of electrolyte solvation structure, develop a quantitative model, and propose an interfacial model to understand the electrode's performance. These findings may lead to a new era beyond the SEI and have implications for the design and improvement of LIBs.

Continuous transition from double-layer to Faradaic charge storage in confined electrolytes

Simon Fleischmann et al.

Summary: This article proposes that electrochemical charge storage in a confined space can transition between electrostatic adsorption and Faradaic intercalation depending on the extent of ion solvation and ion-host interaction. The understanding of electrosorption in porous and layered materials requires a nuanced view of the capacitive mechanism due to electrolyte confinement. The continuum between double-layer capacitance and Faradaic intercalation is dependent on the specific confinement microenvironment.

Unraveling the New Role of an Ethylene Carbonate Solvation Shell in Rechargeable Metal Ion Batteries

Qian Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals the critical role of ethylene carbonate (EC) in metal-ion battery performance and proposes a new mechanism for stabilizing electrolytes. The formation of an Li+-EC pair by EC can dominate the structure at the electrode interface, suppressing solvent decomposition and providing new guidelines for designing more reliable electrolytes.

Optimizing Cycling Conditions for Anode-Free Lithium Metal Cells

A. J. Louli et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the performance of anode-free lithium metal cells under different cycling conditions, and finds that cycling with an asymmetric slower charge protocol is optimal. The research also examines the effect of depth of discharge and demonstrates the benefit of forming a lithium reservoir in situ. Additionally, a specialized intermittent high depth of discharge cycling protocol is developed for anode-free lithium metal cells.

Manipulating Zn anode reactions through salt anion involving hydrogen bonding network in aqueous electrolytes with PEO additive

Mengdie Yan et al.

Summary: The addition of PEO in aqueous electrolytes has been found to improve the cycling stability and Coulombic efficiency of Zn anodes, but the overpotential and long-term stability are significantly influenced by different anions. The choice of salt anions in aqueous electrolytes with PEO additives plays a crucial role in tuning the reaction kinetics and stability of Zn anodes.

Interfacial Model Deciphering High-Voltage Electrolytes for High Energy Density, High Safety, and Fast-Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yeguo Zou et al.

Summary: High-voltage lithium-ion batteries using high-voltage electrolytes can improve energy density and power density, but face challenges such as electrolyte decomposition and unclear interfacial side reactions. A new additive-free electrolyte has been developed to address these issues, providing stability at high voltage, lithium-dendrite-free features during fast charging, and superior performance at low temperatures. Additionally, a new solvation structure-related interfacial model has been introduced to help interpret battery performance and guide the design of versatile electrolytes for metal-ion batteries.
