A planning model for using municipal solid waste management technologies- considering Energy, Economic, and Environmental Impacts in Tehran-Iran

Ramin Hosseinalizadeh et al.

Summary: The municipal waste management planning model utilizes a multi-objective linear programming approach to assess various technologies and objectives, indicating that recycling and composting are preferred options for waste management in Tehran. Additionally, incineration and anaerobic digestion were identified as optimal systems for energy production from non-biodegradable and biodegradable waste components, respectively.

Sustainable design modifications municipal solid waste management network and better optimization for risk reduction analyses

Zakie Mamashli et al.

Summary: The rapid increase in waste generation due to industrialization, urbanization, and population growth has led to environmental damages and social risks, highlighting the importance of effective municipal solid waste management. A multi-objective fuzzy robust programming model is proposed to minimize costs, environmental damages, and optimize social impacts in waste management networks under uncertainty.

Modeling and multi-objective optimization of variable air gasification performance parameters using Syzygium cumini biomass by integrating ASPEN Plus with Response surface methodology (RSM)

Deepak Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: This study developed a robust method for modeling and optimizing variable air gasification parameters using ASPEN Plus simulator and Response Surface Methodology (RSM). A comprehensive thermochemical equilibrium-based model of downdraft gasifier was developed by minimizing Gibbs free energy, and good agreement was attained between simulated and experimental results. The air gasification process was modeled in four phases, including biomass drying, decomposition, gasification, and gas filtration, with sensitivity analysis performed to obtain syngas composition and optimize gasification performance.

Summary: A feasibility analysis was conducted on a 100 tons per day MBT plant, which showed promising results in terms of energy and material recovery for municipal solid waste valorization. The plant's revenue is stable with excellent OPEX, and utilizing RDF locally can further reduce costs, in alignment with global benchmarks.

Life-cycle modeling of nutrient and energy recovery through mixed waste processing systems

Mojtaba Sardarmehni et al.

Summary: This study compared the life-cycle impacts associated with various management alternatives for recovering energy and nutrients from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. It found that mass burn waste-to-energy and gasification scenarios generally have the lowest environmental impacts, while landfilling and gasification Fischer-Tropsch have the greatest impacts. Sensitivity analyses suggest that these conclusions are generally robust to uncertainty in input values.
