Antibacterial Activity and Epigenetic Remodeling of Essential Oils from Calabrian Aromatic Plants

Patrizia D'Aquila et al.

Summary: Essential oils extracted from aromatic plants have been found to have nutritional, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, and can be used as food preservatives. This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of essential oils from ten aromatic plants grown in Italy. The essential oils from Clinopodium nepeta, Origanum vulgare, and Foeniculum vulgare showed the strongest inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. Furthermore, it is possible that epigenetic modifications mediate the antibacterial activity of essential oils.

Insecticidal and Antifungal Activities of Chemically-Characterized Essential Oils from the Leaves of Withania frutescens L.

El Moussaoui Abdelfattah et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the antifungal and insecticidal activities of essential oil extracted from Moroccan Withania frutescens L. (EOW) and characterized its chemical composition. The results showed that EOW exhibited promising antifungal and insecticidal activities, mainly due to the presence of carvacrol, thymol, and camphor. The oil demonstrated mortality rates against Callosobruchus maculatus through inhalation and contact, with higher doses causing significant mortality rates. EOW also showed inhibitory effects on mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum. These findings suggest that EOW can be used as a natural alternative insecticidal and mycocidal agent.
