Growth of hard nanostructured ZrN surface induced by copper nanoparticles

V. Prysiazhnyi et al.

Summary: This study reports on ZrN surfaces with defined nanoroughness achieved by seed-like growth evoked by Cu nanoparticles. The process involves deposition of Cu nanoparticles by gas aggregation forming seeds and growth of ZrN with surface nanoarchitecture. By tailoring the HiPIMS process, hard Cu/ZrN nanocomposite was successfully deposited with roughness and morphology predetermined by the Cu nanoparticles. Nano-indentation confirmed sufficient nanohardness of the CuNPs/ZrN nanocomposite.

Influence of Ag additions on the structure, mechanical properties and oxidation behaviour of CrAlNAg coatings deposited by sputtering

S. S. Rajput et al.

Summary: The addition of Ag into CrAlN coatings resulted in smaller morphological features and more compact coatings, with a maximum hardness observed for the coating with 8.6 at.% Ag. The presence of Ag also degraded the oxidation resistance of the coatings due to the formation of AgCrO2 phase under specific conditions.

Effect of discharge current on the corrosion resistance and microstructure of ZrTiSiN coatings deposited by magnetron co-sputtering

Claudia P. Mejia et al.

Summary: ZrN coatings modified by Ti + Si additions showed improved corrosion resistance compared to binary ZrN coatings and the coatings obtained at I-Zr = 750 mA exhibited outstanding corrosion resistance and high hardness, making them of particular technological interest. The coating structure varied with different currents applied to the Zr target, ranging from predominantly amorphous to predominantly crystalline. The coatings obtained at I-Zr = 750 mA were studied with atom probe tomography to evaluate the interaction of the electrolyte with the columnar boundaries and understand the corrosion mechanism.

Corrosion Improvement of 304L Stainless Steel by ZrSiN and ZrSi(N,O) Mono- and Double-Layers Prepared by Reactive Cathodic Arc Evaporation

Mihaela Dinu et al.

Summary: Zr-based nitrides and oxynitrides were deposited using reactive cathodic arc evaporation on 304L stainless steel substrates in monolayer and double-layer structures. The SS/ZrSiN/ZrSi(N,O) coating exhibited the best corrosion performance in an acidic environment, attributed to the high content of Si and O in the composition, forming a stable passive layer that acted as a barrier to electrolyte ingress.

An ab-initio study of structure and mechanical properties of rocksalt ZrN and its bilayers

Fatemeh Shirvani et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of transition metal nitrides (TMN) as hard coatings were theoretically studied, focusing on zirconium nitride (ZrN) and its response to pressure. Using density functional theory (DFT), it was found that ZrN behaves like a metal and exhibits high hardness, making it suitable for hard coating applications.

Cu oxidation mechanism on Cu-Zr(O)N coatings: Role on functional properties

Jose D. Castro et al.

Summary: Zirconium oxynitride (Zr(O)N) and Copper-Zirconium oxynitrides (Cu-Zr(O)N) were deposited on stainless steel substrates using DC reactive magnetron sputtering, with different oxygen contents achieved through a duty cycle controller. Chemical activation of the samples resulted in the antibacterial effect of CuZrON-DC100, where Cu reacted with O2- ions forming CuO. The multifunctionality of Cu-Zr (O)N coatings, combining aesthetic surface and antibacterial properties, was demonstrated.

Effect of silver content on the microstructure, thermal stability and mechanical properties of CrNx/Ag nanocomposite films

Chunfu Hong et al.

Summary: The microstructure of films is influenced by the incorporation and concentration of Ag, with higher Ag concentration leading to more severe structure evolution. Annealing at 650 degrees results in Ag sublimation and oxide formation on the film surface. Films with 6.2 at.% Ag show superior structural stability at 800 degrees, while films with 20.2 at.% Ag deteriorate.
