A comprehensive experimental study on tribological performance of piston ring-cylinder liner pair

Zhan Liu et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively explored the influence of oil dilution, cylinder liner surface coating, and working conditions on the friction and wear of the piston ring-cylinder liner pair using the orthogonal test method. The results showed that moderate oil dilution improves performance, while excessive dilution has the opposite effect. Additionally, using DLC-coated piston rings and Fe-based coated cylinder liners can significantly enhance the scuffing resistance performance of the piston ring-cylinder liner pair.

The impact of helical slide honing on surface microtexture compared to plateau honing process through relevant characterization methods

Mohammed Yousfi et al.

Summary: The surface texture of the cylinder engine has a significant impact on the functional performances of the ring-pack tribo-system. In this study, the surface microtexture of the cylinder engine manufactured by plateau honing (PH) and helical slide honing (HSH) processes was analyzed using white light interferometry (WLI) and stereometric analysis. The results showed that the PH samples had higher values of root mean square height and fractal dimension compared to the HSH samples.

Optimizing the Mo concentration in low viscosity fully formulated oils

Aaron Thornley et al.

Summary: This study investigates the optimization of the amount of MoDTC added in low viscosity engine oils. It is found that a Mo concentration of approximately 350 ppm is critical for reducing friction and forming the required thickness of MoS2 within the tribofilm. Increasing the Mo concentration promotes the formation of MoS2 in the initial stages of traction, without negatively impacting wear generation.

Combined measurement and simulation of piston ring cylinder liner contacts with a reciprocating long-stroke tribometer

Bjorn Michelberger et al.

Summary: An innovative method using a new reciprocating long-stroke tribometer at component level and a new elastohydrodynamic simulation model enable investigation of a greater range of operating conditions in combustion engines. Results show a quantifiable distinction between investigated tribological systems and a high correlation between measured friction results and simulation, allowing for further parameter studies of reciprocating contacts.

Effect of Energy and Temperature on Tetrahedral Amorphous Carbon Coatings Deposited by Filtered Laser-Arc

Frank Kaulfuss et al.

Summary: The study investigated the plasma process of filtered laser-arc evaporation and properties of tetrahedral amorphous carbon coatings, finding that greater hardness is achieved with increased overlapping of bias and arc pulse times. Anisotropy in properties was observed specifically at a medium temperature of 120 degrees C during deposition, attributed to the formation of nanocrystalline graphite areas oriented towards the film's normal direction. This novel coating type offers superior mechanical behavior due to its combination of high hardness and low in-plane Young's Modulus.
