Good vibrations: Big data impact bedload research

Basil Gomez et al.

Summary: Research has shown that bedload transport is a time-variant and location-sensitive process in rivers. Previous measurements were only able to average out some temporal and spatial variability, but recent monitoring of diverse rivers has provided continuous, highly resolved, long-period records of transport activity, highlighting the importance of this variability.

Beyond Stationarity: Influence of Flow History and Sediment Supply on Coarse Bedload Transport

P. W. Downs et al.

Summary: Understanding how river bedload responds to climate and land use changes and water resource management initiatives is critical in developing sustainable approaches to river management. The relative proportion of supply-related coarse bedload yield is strongly related to the wetness of the previous year. High-resolution, multiyear passive monitoring data can reveal unique controls on bedload dynamics specific to a site's hydrogeoclimatic context.

Relevance of acoustic methods to quantify bedload transport and bedform dynamics in a large sandy-gravel-bed river

Jules Le Guern et al.

Summary: This study evaluated various bedload measurement techniques and found that hydrophone measurement is the most effective and accurate method in a large sandy-gravel-bed river. Further research is needed to determine the parameters controlling self-generated sediment noise, and the calibration procedure used in this study provides a satisfactory estimation of bedload transport rates. Additionally, aDcp and hydrophone measurement techniques are accurate enough to quantify bedload variations associated with dune migration.
