Calculations of electron inelastic mean free paths. XIII. Data for 14 organic compounds and water over the 50 eV to 200 keV range with the relativistic full Penn algorithm

Hiroshi Shinotsuka et al.

Summary: The study calculated the inelastic mean free paths (IMFPs) of 14 organic compounds and liquid water at different electron energies and compared them with other experimental and calculated results. The results showed good agreement between the calculated IMFPs and the measured values within a certain energy range. However, there were significant differences between the experimental results for liquid water and the calculated results, calling for further investigation and resolution.

Inelastic scattering of electrons in water from first principles: cross sections and inelastic mean free path for use in Monte Carlo track-structure simulations of biological damage

Natalia E. E. Koval et al.

Summary: This work presents ab initio calculations of the energy loss function (ELF) and inelastic scattering cross sections in liquid water using linear-response time-dependent density functional theory. The results show good agreement with recent calculations and experimental data. The study also provides an analysis of the contributions of different molecular orbitals, species, and orbital angular momenta to the total ELF, as well as single-differential cross sections for each molecular orbital channel, which can be useful for Monte Carlo track-structure simulations.

Relative Role of Physical Mechanisms on Complex Biodamage Induced by Carbon Irradiation

Simone Taioli et al.

Summary: Research on the use of swift ion beams in cancer treatment and manned space missions reveals the importance of electronic excitation spectrum in medium response to charged particle perturbation. By studying the energy-loss function of liquid water using density functional theory, accurate Monte Carlo simulations were performed to predict the main inelastic processes contributing to radiation biodamage, with ionization being the predominant mechanism. Surprisingly, dissociative electron attachment plays a minor role in carbon-ion induced harmful events clusters.

Electron transport in DNA bases: An extension of the Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo toolkit

Sara A. Zein et al.

Summary: The Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo toolkit has been extended to include electron interactions with the four DNA bases using cross sections from the Geant-DNA CPA100 models. The calculations for electron cross sections and other parameters in the four DNA bases are in good agreement with literature, highlighting the importance of including DNA bases cross sections in track structure codes for better estimation of radiation effects on biological material.
