Multi-layer deposition mechanism in ultra high-frequency pulsed wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) of NiTi shape memory alloys

W. C. Ke et al.

Summary: UHFP-GTAW-WAAM was used to fabricate thin walls of NiTi shape memory alloys. A three-dimensional numerical model was developed to simulate the deposition process, and an improved free surface tracing method was proposed. The study revealed that the vibration of the molten pool induced by UHFP current power can improve the microstructure of the parts.

Modeling and numerical study of keyhole-induced porosity formation in laser beam oscillating welding of 5A06 aluminum alloy

Wenchao Ke et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical framework and methods to suppress porosity formation in laser beam oscillating welding. The study found that porosity decreased and was fully inhibited when using an infinity-oscillating path with a frequency of 200 Hz. The developed multi-physics model aids in understanding keyhole-induced porosity formation during laser beam oscillating welding of 5A06 aluminum alloy.

High-strength Fe/Al dissimilar joint with uniform nanometer-sized intermetallic compound layer and mechanical interlock formed by adjustable probes during double-sided friction stir spot welding

Xiaopei Wang et al.

Summary: A high-strength Fe/Al dissimilar joint was successfully fabricated using double-sided friction stir spot welding with adjustable probes, which introduced strong mechanical interlocks at the interface and a uniform IMC layer. The 30 nm IMC layer composed of a ternary phase of Al?Fe?Si, induced by fresh surface from the adjustable probes, resulted in a high-strength welded joint. This novel technique was effective and productive for joining dissimilar materials.

Summary: This study provides a deep insight into the relationship between flow stress, temperature, and strain rate in friction stir welding by integrating phase-field simulation of dynamic recrystallization. It introduces a modified constitutive equation considering the DRX softening effect to improve the prediction accuracy in FSW process modeling. The analysis quantitatively evaluates the variation of dislocation density and stress, ultimately enhancing the understanding of the process mechanism.

Effect of the gap width in AZ31 magnesium alloy joints obtained by friction stir welding

Fernanda Rocha Chiuzuli et al.

Summary: For thin AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets welded using Friction Stir Welding in butt joint configuration with gap width up to 1.15 mm, the gap width affects weld thickness but not microstructure and hardness. Within a certain range, there is a slight decrease in Ultimate Tensile Strength with increasing gap width.
