Tracing the Atmospheric Input of Seawater-Dissolvable Pb Based on the Budget of 210Pb in the East Sea (Japan Sea)

Hojong Seo et al.

Summary: Through investigation in the East Sea, it was found that Pb-210 and dissolved Pb in the area are significantly influenced by terrestrial sources through atmospheric input. Modeling estimates showed that the atmospheric input of seawater-dissolvable Pb accounts for approximately 25% of the total Pb flux in the region.

210Po-210Pb distribution and carbon export in the northern Gulf of Mexico continental slope

Wokil Bam et al.

Summary: The study investigates the vertical fluxes of POC in the continental slope of the northern Gulf of Mexico using short-lived radionuclide pair 210Po - 210Pb. The results show that in the upper 150 m of the water column, the inventories of 210Pb were consistently greater than those of 210Po, while the total overall water column inventories of 210Po and 210Pb were near equilibrium. The fluxes of 210Po varied between 9.8 +/- 6.34 dpm m-2 d-1 and 30.7 +/- 12.06 dpm m-2 d-1 with corresponding POC fluxes between 8.6 mg C m-2 d-1 and 37.65 mg C m-2 d-1.

210Po and 210Pb as Tracers of Particle Cycling and Export in the Western Arctic Ocean

Wokil Bam et al.

Summary: The distribution and vertical fluxes of particulate organic carbon and other key elements in the Arctic Ocean are mainly influenced by primary productivity, ice cover, and lateral exchange. Seasonal vertical fluxes of particulate organic and inorganic carbon, nitrogen, and biogenic silica were studied using tracers in the western Arctic Basin in 2015. The results highlight the importance of POC and PN fluxes in seasonal vertical transport, with the highest fluxes observed in ice-covered stations in the northern region.

Novel Application of 210Po-210Pb Disequilibria to Date Snow, Melt Pond, Ice Core, and Ice-Rafted Sediments in the Arctic Ocean

Mark Baskaran et al.

Summary: By analyzing Po-210 and Pb-210 disequilibria in various matrices such as aerosols, snow, ice cores, melt ponds, and ice-rafted sediments, as well as measuring the Po-210/Pb-210 activity ratios, researchers have developed a novel chronometer for dating snow, ice cores, melt ponds, and ice-rafted sediments. The observed disequilibrium in ice between Po-210 and Pb-210 can be used as a quantitative tool in distinguishing between multi-year and seasonal ice, and as a metric for quantifying the speed of ice/snow melting and the delay in autumn freeze.
