Modeling ocean-induced rapid Earth rotation variations: an update

Alexander A. Harker et al.

Summary: This study reexamines the ocean's contribution to rapid, non-tidal Earth rotation variations and identifies issues in oceanic angular momentum estimates. Accounting for OAM from other models significantly reduces the variance of atmosphere-corrected geodetic excitation, and higher model resolution is suggested as a target for improving the oceanic component in Earth system modeling.

Revisiting the Ocean's Nonisostatic Response to 5-Day Atmospheric Loading: New Results Based on Global Bottom Pressure Records and Numerical Modeling

Richard E. Thomson et al.

Summary: The study examines the non-isostatic response of the World Ocean to surface air pressure forcing within the 4-6-day band using bottom pressure records from 59 sites of the global tsunami warning system. Numerical simulations show a pronounced dynamic response of the World Ocean to nonstationary air pressure fields, closely resembling the theoretical Rossby-Haurwitz air pressure mode. Both analytical and observational versions of air pressure loading accurately reproduce the seafloor pressure records in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.
